Feminist Jeanne Marie Hathway's Hot Take on Nike's Ads

If you haven't seen my last post on Nike's new ads, check it out before you read this one! My beautiful friend and suitemate Jeanne Marie is one of the boldest and most inspiring people I know, so I definitely wanted to show her these ads to see what she thought of them.

"Oh, I have such chills! I like that they focused on so many different aspects of a woman, existing, being attractive, being inspirational for other women expecially, but for men as well, like the part when the men were cheering the boxing women on in a bar. It's not like 'women can't do this,' it's like actually they can."

"I think it's really cool that these are from countries that are historically and currently very oppressive of women. I think the boldness of that line, 'we bring pride to our entire nation,' was awesome. I also think, though, that down the line, on a deeper sense, your worth should be in God, not in what you do, but for a girl it's a great message because it gives her back a great responsibility that she can do these things and for better or worse, she has ability and power to try."

I admire Jeanne and her perspective so much, and I think she brings such depth to these commercials. I think that empowering women in these countries in particular is so important because they truly know what oppression feels like. I think that's something all women can relate to, even on a minuscule level, and that's why it's so powerful. It's also powerful to look at this and be able to relate, if even a little, and to the messages they portray.
